Edward Goldberg III Obituary

Bennettsville, SC

Edward Hammett Goldberg, III, affectionately known as “Bumsy”, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2023. Born March 14, 1931 in Bennettsville, SC. He was the son of the late Dr. Edward Hammett Goldberg, Jr. and Sue Gravitt Goldberg. He grew up in Bennettsville and graduated from Bennettsville High School. While attending high school, he was awarded senior superlatives of “Best Dressed”, as he would come home on his lunch hour and change into a different dashing outfit for the afternoon and “Most Likely To Succeed.”

After attending BHS, he began his college career at The Citadel and later transferred to The University of South Carolina and earned a degree in Geology. Upon graduation, he attended the University of South Carolina Law School for one year but decided a law career was not for him.

While attending USC, a radio announcement changed his life stating, “If you had completed at least two years of college, you were eligible for pilot training .” Intrigued, he contacted the U.S. Air Force and traveled to Georgia to take the necessary exams. He was accepted, and on October 3, 1952, began primary training at Bartow Air Force Base in Florida. As it happened, though, he met a local Florida girl named Betty Jones, fell in love, and got married.

Edward served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 – 1963. He was stationed at multiple Air Force bases, including Bainbridge (GA), Laredo (TX), McCoy (FL), and Fairchild (WA). As a pilot, his missions included flying T-28 aircraft, T-33 single-engine jets, and B-47s (six-engine bombers).

Edward was a loving, devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very supportive of his family and children, participating in their multi-interests of sports, Boy Scouts, Brownies, school and social activities, boating and water skiing, camping, and family trips. His favorite hobbies included wood-working, fishing, hunting, crabbing, cooking/grilling and bargain shopping. In addition, many friends benefitted from his generously giving nature. Paw-Paw, as he was affectionately known by his seven grandchildren and eight-grandchildren, enjoyed their visits and found great joy in treating them with a prized toy or object (no matter how big or small). He was particularly proud that one of the twin boy great-grands was given his name of Edward. He was a proud man who instilled in his family honestly, values, fulfilling obligations as promised.

Edward was predeceased by his beloved wife Betty Jones Goldberg of 68 years and a brother, Joseph Cobb Goldberg.

He is survived by his three children, Dr. Edward Hammett “Ed” Goldberg, IV (Barbara), Laura Goldberg Lester (Lon) and Steven Richard Goldberg (Marisa). He is also survived by his seven beloved grandchildren, Edward Hammett “Vee” Goldberg V, Elizabeth Kaye Goldberg Dillon (Joey), Mary Catherine Goldberg Johnson (Matt), Wyatt Harrison Lester (Mackenzie),Kensley Lester Carson (Ryan), Jaycee Goldberg Cummings (Larry), Mary Goldberg Sellers (Spencer) and eight great-grandchildren, Jason Harper Elliott, Sawyer Sutton Lester, Saylor Sullivan Lester, Olivia Grace Carson, Cam Russell Carson, Nolan Edward Carson, Landon Cole Johnson, and Gracelyn Rowe Johnson.
