John Jackson, III Obituary

 Bennettsville, SC

John Murchison Jackson, III died July 3, 2022, at home. He was born January 26, 1947, in Bennettsville and was the son of the late John M Jackson Jr. and Adelaide Philson Jackson.

Mr. Jackson graduated from Wofford College in 1969 with a degree in Economics. While at college, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, where he formed many long-lasting friendships. After college, he was commissioned into the US Army and served full-time for three years. He then transferred to the US Army Reserves. He enjoyed his time in service and the camaraderie that it provided him. During his service, he graduated from the United States Army War College. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He married Kathryn Peedin Phillips on July 12, 1970. He worked as a Bank Manager at SCNB in Florence. He and his family then moved to Bennettsville, where he joined his father’s business and became a Professional Land Surveyor for 45 years.

He and Kathryn built a strong legacy of family and love in their almost fifty-two years of marriage. He was thrilled to become a grandfather and was called “Pooh” by them all. He enjoyed spending time with them in Bennettsville and at the beach, where he could spoil them with ice cream and show them off to his friends.

He loved Marlboro County and served on the Bennettsville City Council and the Bennettsville Housing Authority for several terms. A devoted lifelong member of St Paul’s Anglican Church, he served on Vestry. He was also a member of Rotary International and the South Carolina Society of Professional Land Surveyors.

No longer able to both play golf or hunt in recent years, he still loved going to his hunt club to enjoy nature and his friendships developed there. An early riser, he relished the variety of breakfast companions at Magnolia Cafe each morning. With his retirement from surveying, he often called on friends to exchange his opinions of the news or just to check on them.

He is predeceased by his parents and his sister Rebecca Jackson Graves. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn P Jackson; his daughters Emily J Hines (Jonathan) of Charlotte and Elizabeth J Fazenbaker (Jonathon) of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Thomas Michael Hines, Madeline Grace Fazenbaker, and Emma Jackson Hines.

A funeral service will be held at St Paul's Anglican Church, Bennettsville, July 8, at 11:00 AM, followed by interment at McCall Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Bennettsville or McCall Cemetery in Bennettsville.
