John Avery Scism age 86, of Bennettsville, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, after an extended illness.

John was born March 21, 1936, in Kings Mountain, NC. He was a son of the late Grady Fay and Fern Hovis Scism. John was a member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University. After graduation, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He returned to Kings Mountain after his duty with the Marines to help his father farm. John moved to Bennettsville over 50 years ago and started Scism Construction Company. In his spare time, John enjoyed sailing and gardening. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his loving wife and daughters.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two siblings; Jack Scism and Linda Paul.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Geraldine Rogers Scism of the home; daughters, Beth Scism (Robert Newton) of McColl, and Karen Truesdale (Matthew) of Simpsonville; sisters, Sadie Patterson (Gilbert) and Shirley Ware of Kings Mountain, NC.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022 in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Bennettsville at 2:00 p.m.

The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
